week2 follow up

Week 2
we talked about the works of Shakespeare.
  • vocabulary
  • plays, comedy, tragedy, history and problem plays
  • sonnets
Then I ( teacher Julie) gave a sample presentation on The Natural Order and Social Positions. The shortened version being that it is certainly ironic that a time during which was lead by a woman was indeed the Golden age, was also a time when all other women held low social status. Yet Shakespeare wrote many of his plays with strong female roles. That's where natural order comes in to things. Often his plays didn't follow The natural order. This caused disorder and ciaos. In the comedies things were always put right in the end, but it is usually the reason for the down fall of our heroes in the tragedies. This also teaches us about human nature.
I look forward to seeing the presentations that each of the scholars presents this semester. We had a signup for those topics and dates. I will send out the list to remind those that signed up and those that have not. Adam Claridge has bravely signed up for the first one, this week Sept 25th.

Our first discussion went well. There was lots of talking ( some on topic and some not). We also discussed our first writing assignment "frailty thy name is woman"due week 3. Don't get ahead on the writing assignments because we discuss them in class before they are assigned to help the scholars start thinking about it. It also gives them a chance to ask questions if they didn't understand a part of the scene they read.

This week assignments:
  • Read Act I scenes 3-5
  • we will discuss the question " Is it better to let others share our burdens? when you share them do you make better decisions about them? why or why not?" not due until week 4.
  • bonus question: Where is Wittenberg?
  • Keep reading, watching and listening to the plays.
that's all for now.
